Stop financing deforestation with public money!

 

The above sentences were said by the Brazilian Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Tereza Cristina. But if the country no longer needs to deforest in order to produce, does it make sense to finance production in areas with new deforestation? Why don’t we allocate resources (rural credits/subsidies/insurance) only to producers who do not deforest?

A campaign by Instituto Escolhas defends that all public resources aimed at supporting agriculture – financing, credits, subsidies, debt forgiveness, tax waivers and other incentives – should be offered strictly to those who produce without deforesting.

If you don’t need to deforest to produce, why finance deforestation with public money?
