Where does so much mercury come from?
This study was carried out by analyzing official records on gold production in areas with wildcat mining permits, estimates of mercury usage in these operations, and official mercury import records. In detail, the research traces the mercury route into Brazil and reveals that 185 tons of mercury, of unknown origin, may have been used in gold production across Brazil between 2018 and 2022.
